Using the Diconix 150 and 150 Plus Printers with the Amiga
by Calum Tsang
----------------------------------------------------------
Introduction:
-------------
The Diconix 150 printer from Kodak is a wonderful, quick, small and quiet
output device. We use the series of printers here at MediaWorks Unlimited
with our IBM-compatible laptop. Soon we asked ourselves, "Why don't we use
it with the Amiga?"
Physical Connection:
--------------------
The 150 or 150 Plus attaches in directly through the parallel port and uses
a standard printer cable.
Driver Software:
----------------
The Diconix 150 uses the Workbench 1.3 EpsonXOld Driver and does not feature
the three-pass function. The 150 Plus requires the EpsonX[CBM_Mps-1250] and
does feature the three-pass function. Set your preferences to these
drivers.
Software Compatibility:
-----------------------
Using a text only/draft/NLQ print mode from a word processor like Scribble!
from MicroSystems Software is fine with the 150, but anything that prints
graphically is problematic. The 150 was designed to be used with laptops
and as things goes, most laptops are IBM-compatible. With the exception of
the Mac Portable, laptops do not need graphics output. Kodak/Diconix
recognized this little shortcoming and quickly pulled out the Diconix M150
for use with the Mac.
With a program like ProWrite (In Amiga Bitmap Font Mode) or DPaint, the 150
or 150 Plus prints everything 3/4 small. Unfortunately, nothing can be done
about this except for a major re-write of the Amiga printing routines, or
the program itself. However, on Professional Page, you can use the 150 or
150 Plus to full extent. Read on for details.
ProPage and the 150:
--------------------
To use ProPage with the Diconix, layout with all your boxes close to the
left as possible. You can put about 1/8 Inch between the edge of your box
and the left-edge of the paper. On the other side, leave 1 and 7/8 inches
between the box and edge of the paper. With Preferences, select Wide
tractor and when printing select Proportions to be 1.33 times on each axis.
